In an interview broadcast Tuesday with Donald Trumpthe former press secretary of Kayleigh McEnanyJohnson said he wasn’t “surprised” that people were looking for information about his past.
McEnany asked Johnson for his thoughts on being called a “religious fundamentalist” by former White House press secretary Jen Psaki and other critics.
“Look, there are entire industries that are built to bring down public leaders, political leaders like me. That doesn’t surprise me,” Johnson said.
He added: “I’m not trying to establish Christianity as a national religion or anything like that, that’s not what this is about at all. If you truly believe in the commandments of the Bible and seek to follow them, it is impossible to be a hateful person.
Johnson might have intended his comments to appease voters, but people on social media didn’t seem reassured.
