Lil Nas X wants to set the record straight.
“I didn’t necessarily want to apologize but I wanted to explain where I was and where I was over the last week,” he said in a new Instagram video.
On Friday, the rapper released his latest single “J Christ.” In the weeks leading up to and in the music video itself, Lil Nas X used Christian imagery as a marketing gimmick. From the cover, which represents him on a cross, to a fake acceptance letter from Liberty University, In a video where he “participates” in communion, the rapper did not hesitate to make all the religious references possible.
Not surprisingly, Christians did not appreciate these insincere references. Countless social media users slammed the rapper for mocking his beliefs.
Now, Lil Nas X is responding to the backlash by explaining his intentions.
“First of all, when I made this piece, I knew there would be people upset or whatever, simply because religion is a very sensitive subject for a lot of people,” he began . “But I didn’t want to make fun of it either. It wasn’t a “fuck you” for you, “fuck you” for Christians. It was not this. It was literally me saying, “Oh, I’m back like Jesus,” that was it. »
“I’m not the first person to dress up as Jesus, I’m not the first rapper, I’m not the first artist and I won’t be the last,” he continued. “And I know that given my history, with the ‘Call Me By Your Name’ video, anything I do related to religion could be seen as mockery, and that wasn’t the case in this case -this.”
He then apologized for a promotional video released last Thursday in which he consumed communion wine and wafers.
“I will say that with the communion video, with me eating crackers and juice, I thought that video was going to be the video to lighten the mood,” he said. “I thought it was something we all wanted to do as kids, but I didn’t understand the reality of what it was. It’s me eating communion, which is the symbolism of the blood and bones of Jesus or something like that, I don’t remember it completely. I didn’t want to talk about cannibalism or any other phenomenon… I apologize for that, I’ll say I’m sorry for that.
“Even though I don’t agree with all the rules of Christianity or whatever, I know that not everyone follows Christianity to the letter 100%, otherwise the world would be a lot crazier,” he said. he continued. “But I apologize. It’s not about trying to get everyone on my side or anything, it’s more about clearing my head about my own decisions. I know I really messed up this time, and I can act undisturbed all I want, but it definitely took a mental toll on me.
