Tattoo artist Kat Von D is asking people to pray for her and her husband, amid a wave of backlash over her decision to become a Christian.
She has since spoken candidly about her faith, although she has been the target of trolls criticizing her choice to embrace religion or claiming she doesn’t look Christian due to her fashion and style choices .
Kate opened up about the impact of such comments during an appearance on the Relatable podcast with Allie Beth Stuckey, where she explained that while her husband, musician Rafael Reyes, supported her on her journey, he didn’t choose to become a Christian himself.
Kat shares her five-year-old son, Leafar Von Drachenberg Reyes, with Reyes.
“When we met, we were both not Christians,” she said. “We got married and he really helped me, unknowingly, find my way. And he’s not necessarily on the same wavelength.
“In a way he is very supportive, we go to church together every Sunday; he always supports me and we pray together.”
She continued: “But there’s a part of (Reyes) that’s still in question, and after experiencing so much heartache from people that took its toll on my husband. I remember the next morning he m ‘Said, ‘Baby, I don’t want to be apart of this’.”
Kat described trying to “set an example” for her husband in the hope that “one day he can come to her and say, ‘Hey, guess what? I gave my heart to Jesus.”
“It hasn’t happened yet,” Kat said.
However, the artist is aware of the impact trolls can have on her husband’s faith, as she continues: “When you have a whole community of people attacking you, that doesn’t mean my husband is going to do something based on a comment on Instagram – but when it’s so amplified, it turns people off.”
With that in mind, Kat instead asked people to share kind thoughts for the couple.
“If these people really cared about me or my husband, instead of separating us or him, I hope you would just pray for us,” she said.
“It’s hard enough in real life to go through all these things.”
