Coimbatore: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami appealed to the country’s minorities Tamilnadu to support the AIADMK, assuring them that the party would protect the rights of minorities.
Speaking at the conference organized by a federation of Christian organizationsnear Karumathampatti in Coimbatore on Tuesday, the EPS said it was time for Christians to stop being deceived. “I urge you not to be misled by the wily DMK and exercise caution while taking decisions in future,” he said.
EPS, who received a rousing welcome with a giant garland and was given the title of ‘Guardian of Minorities’ at the event, said minorities should understand that it was the AIADMK which had safeguarded their rights since the era of late Chief Minister MG Ramachandran. “The AIADMK has offered financial assistance for the Jerusalem pilgrimage. We also raised funds for the renovation of old churches,” he said.
Seeking to refute criticism that the AIADMK is antagonizing minorities because it has allied with the BJP, the EPS said even the DMK has allied with the BJP in the past. “Was the DMK not aware of the BJP’s policies when it was forming an alliance? People will not forget that the DMK had ties with the BJP for power,” he said.
He accused the DMK of allying with the BJP when it suited them, but chose to criticize the AIADMK for allying with the BJP “as part of a cunning strategy” in the hope of misleading minorities .
EPS said the minorities have now woken up and started questioning the DMK. “We will be your protective shield whether we are in power or not,” he said. EPS told a short story in which an old farmer believes that his eldest son worked hard in the fields and showers him with gifts. It was only later that he realized that it was the younger son who worked in the fields while the older one cheated on him.
EPS further claimed that on the governance front too, the DMK had failed miserably. Prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed, electricity rates and property tax have been increased, industrialists are finding it difficult to run their units, the construction sector has been hit due to the surge in prices of construction materials and farmers are in distress. “While the common man is going through so much hardship, the DMK government remains ineffective in controlling price rise,” the EPS said.
He attacked Chief Minister MK Stalin for arresting farmers protesting against acquisition of agricultural land for an industrial project at Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai district.
