Life can come fast if you’re Brock Purdy. Going from Mr. Irrelevant to Super Bowl quarterback in less than two years can be daunting for many. But the young 49ers gunslinger remains grounded thanks to his modesty, humility and journey to a higher power.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has taken a mature approach heading into his first Super Bowl. Despite being only 24 years old, the Arizona native has maintained an even-keeled approach to the pressures of football throughout his journey.
This mindset comes from being rooted in his faith and taking a global approach to what happened with the 49ers.
“Life is about being a part of something bigger than yourself,” said Brock Purdy. “You’re busy getting all the glory, fame and status, I feel like it’s a superficial life. And it can disappear pretty quickly.
Purdy spoke openly about religion, being a devout Christian himself. While it’s not always sexy or a hot topic for general NFL fans, it’s important to discuss in order to better understand the 49ers QB.
Case in point: He praised God for helping him win the 49ers’ NFC championship against the Detroit Lions a week and a half before. Purdy usually begins or ends a postgame on-field interview with his appreciation for The Holy Spirit, doing so again on stage after the 49ers clinched their spot in Super Bowl LVIII.

Religion is everything to Brock Purdy and his family, with some passages guiding him through year two in the NFL. One of them particularly stands out, the one he reads every morning before starting his day.
“This year, for me, it’s Psalm 23. Yes, “the Lord is my shepherd.” I have what I need. He lets me lie down in green pastures. He leads me to the edge of still waters. And it continues,” Purdy said Tuesday, explaining the scriptures. “Playing this game, playing this sport, there’s a lot to do. It’s easy to get carried away by the desire and the feeling of wanting to be loved obviously by your teammates and by everyone, but like the world. So for me in this passage it’s about the fact that I already have what I need from the Good Shepherd in Jesus.

This passage alone kept him inside him all season. As he said, it’s easy to get caught up in the glitz and glamor of the NFL limelight, especially in the Bay Area.
The previous starting QB was one of the most popular people south of the Golden Gate Bridge, known for both his talent and his looks. And he was showing it off, seen at various events around town.
The difference with Brock Purdy is that he has both qualities of his predecessor (at a higher level also in terms of talent), but never brags. It’s never about him on the 49ers; It’s about how can he do more to make the guys around him win games.
This quality is hard to find in most, especially for a 24-year-old player.
“That, I think, is the most special thing about Brock. He doesn’t need to change much, it’s really who he is. Brock is as humble a person as ever,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said Tuesday. “I said he has a solid foundation of who he is, and I think it’s rare that people have that…I know when he came into the league you could see it right away on him. You saw him through everything. I mean, the third-line quarterback, the starting quarterback, what he’s done this year, he’s still the same as day one. You can ask him (but) I think it has a lot to do with his faith, how he lives his life and carries himself in everything he does.
“If you say I’m a game manager and I don’t look flashy the way I do it, that’s your opinion. And that’s OK. Ultimately, I want to do whatever it takes to help my team win.”

Brock Purdy has a prayer routine before every match, with occasional follow-ups in big moments. The last two playoff games have had this in spades, with SF trailing at halftime in both contests.
However, Purdy’s prayers are never selfish. Some might think he turns to the Lord for personal gain, but in reality, the Arizona native uses prayer to stay grounded, turning to higher powers to help him cut through the outside noise.
“Yes, I do (I pray). It’s not “God, can we win here?” Can we do something big here? It’s more about just having that peace, that steadfastness in all the chaos,” Brock Purdy said. “That’s really what it is, it’s like, ‘Holy Spirit, take over and lead me here right now and let me think clearly’…And like I said, I ‘ve got a balanced mindset that I get. of the Holy Spirit. »
