A historic downtown Kenosha building is back in business with the new bar Church and Market, 701 56th St., which has its ribbon cutting Friday. The new corner bar offers a wide variety of drinks for “everyone,” according to operations manager Andy Bilski, from cocktails and wine to local beers. It offers a variety of dishes, from truffle fries and chicken wings to their “Bratcuterie,” a Wisconsin charcuterie board of freshly grilled bratwurst, Bavarian pretzels, pickles, sauerkraut, beer cheese and honey mustard.Owner Kyle Kavalauskas, who also owns Tavern on 6th, said when the opportunity arose to purchase the old building,…

Faith, politics and Christian identity Once again, it is my turn to write this column in this election week. While our nation rightly relies on a healthy separation of church and state, it is unhealthy for individuals to have a separation between our faith and politics. The question is what will inform the other. Will we allow our faith to shape our political choices, or will we allow our policies to shape our faith? Are we Christians who vote or are we supporters of a political party that is also Christian? I think the main difference between the two is…
Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, appeals for financial support for his diocese as he reaches out to residents of Gaza and others suffering the consequences of the war in the Holy Land. By Lisa Zengarini As the war between Hamas and Israel continues to wreak humanitarian havoc in Gaza, Patriarch Pierbattista Pizzaballa issued a message urgent call Friday, asking for support to help the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem reach all those affected. “Charity and prayer animate the entire extended family of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, especially in times of extreme difficulty,” declared the Cardinal Patriarch of Jerusalem.…
“How can a person of faith address politics as a whole? »It’s a question many people have grappled with for years, especially lately, a Seattle-area pastor acknowledged to Fox News Digital in a recent phone interview. “Politics is going to be a hot – and intense – topic over the next 14 months,” said Pastor Jesse Bradley of Grace Community Church in Auburn, Washington. IS PARADISE REAL? PASTOR REVEALS FAITH-FILLED RESPONSE AS PEOPLE CONSIDER THE TRUTH ABOUT HEAVENThe first Republican debate has already taken place – with a second scheduled for September 27, broadcast on FOX Business. “For many people today, setting aside their own path to conform to an outside authority simply does not seem comprehensible as a form of spiritual living,” writes Charles Taylor in A secular era. This statement is at the heart of the greatest challenge facing the contemporary Church. To help our neighbors trust Jesus for their salvation, we must make the Christian gospel understandable. Comprehensibility is not the same as making the gospel enjoyable or comfortable. Rather, the Gospel must be imaginable to people who can no longer conceive of true faith as a possible vision of reality in a secular…

Visit the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist in downtown Cleveland is an unusual experience for many people. In order to allow a greater number of faithful to experience the mother Church of the diocese, Theology on the West Rocks recently organized a tour of the cathedral. Diane Fusco, a long-time cathedral parishioner and host, guided visitors through the church and pointed out many interesting things while informing them of its history and significance. The cathedral is the bishop’s church, which is obvious because it is where the cathedra, or special seat used by the bishop, is located. (See photo…
When Corwin Smith began doing research while he was a graduate student in the 1970s, he says, “most academics thought at the time that religion had no real impact on politics.” But less than a year after writing his thesis on political party identification, Jimmy Carter was elected president of the United States. For Smidt, “it kind of sparked a discussion about the role of religion in politics.” Over the next few years, Smidt attended professional meetings in his field. It was there that he noticed that some researchers were using survey data and incorrectly classifying people religiously. One example…
“Historical Christian positions on social issues do not correspond to contemporary political orientations. » wrote Superstar Presbyterian pastor Tim Keller in a September 2018 op-ed for The New York Times titled “How Do Christians Fit Into the Two-Party System?” This is not the case. Keller, who pastors a large church in New York and has long called his approach to evangelism “seductive,” has been criticized by other thinkers such as James R. Wood And Aaron Renn for taking an approach that “did not denounce secular culture, but confidently engaged that culture on its own terms in a pluralistic public space,”…
