NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE-Former President Donald Trump compared the criminal indictments he faces to the Biden administration’s targeting of Christians while speaking Thursday evening at the National Convention of Religious Broadcasters.
“For all Americans, but especially for Christians, nothing is more important than defeating this evil system and returning to equal and impartial justice under the constitutional rule of law,” said the former president.
“They are using law enforcement as a weapon to target parents, conservatives and Catholics,” Trump noted, citing the (since rescinded) Justice Department memo. target worried parents of public school children in 2021 and the memo from the FBI office in Richmond, Virginia, calling for investigations into “radical-traditional Catholic hate groups”, citing the Southern Poverty Law Center.
“Catholics are persecuted. Catholics,” he repeated. “But evangelicals, they’re all on the list.”
He promised that if he wins the 2024 presidential election, “never again will the federal government be used to target you people of faith.” He promised to open an investigation into “any political prisoner who has been unjustly prosecuted” under the Biden administration.
“The same DOJ that abandoned accusations against Antifawhere they killed people, where they destroyed cities…the same Biden DOJ arrested six pro-life activists right here in Tennessee, arresting them for a peaceful protest outside a clinic, where they prayed, sang hymns and were expelled with great force,” Trump said.
He noted that these protesters had been “convicted on scandalous charges.”
The former president referred to pro-life activists Chet Gallagher, Coleman Boyd, Heather Idoni, Cal Zastrow, Dennis Green and Paul Vaughn, who were convicted and face up to 11 years in prison for their peaceful protest in the hallway outside a Mount Juliet abortion center in March 2021. Last month, a Nashville grand jury found them guilty of violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act and conspiring against rights.
“These are Persecuted Christians. They are being persecuted by Joe Biden and his people,” the former president said.
Trump promised to defend Christian symbols and launch a task force to combat “anti-Christian bias.”
“No one will touch the cross of Christ under the Trump administration, I swear,” he said. “I will never allow the mainstream media or left-wing lobby groups to silence you. »
“Remember that throughout history all communist regimes have tried to crush churches, just as all fascist regimes have tried to co-opt them,” he said, asserting that the left today uses both strategies.
Trump also reiterated that his opponents were targeting him because they were trying to go after the American people.
“They are not after me; they are after you, and I happen to be in your way,” he said.
“They are trying to shame Christians; they’re trying to shame us,” Trump said. “Actually, I’m a very proud Christian.”
“I am indicted for you,” he added.
Afterwards, the former president joked that he faced more criminal charges than major criminals of the past.
“I was indicted more than Al Capone, the great gangster,” he said. “I have been charged more than some of the greatest criminals in history.”
He joked that every time “my plane flies over a blue state” he gets a court summons.
Still, “with me, I’m being indicted and my numbers (in the polls) are going up… because people know it’s a scam,” he said.
Trump warned that Christians “cannot afford to stand idly by in this fight. The corrupt persecution by this regime will not end with me.
“At the end of the day, the radical left is coming after all of us because our allegiance doesn’t belong to them,” he said. “Our allegiance is to our creator, they don’t want to hear that. …We don’t answer to bureaucrats in Washington, we answer to God in heaven.
“It makes no sense that a Christian or a person of faith could vote for a Democrat,” Trump added.
He said the greatest threat to America came from within and that America could not overcome without God’s help.
“To achieve victory in this fight, just like the victories of the past, we still need the hand of our Lord and the grace of God Almighty,” the former president said.
